Great analysis of psychotherapy and spiritualitySpirituality can be defined across a broad-based medium of faith expressions. In this book, the author follows a number of psychotherapists as they incorporate their faith and professional practices. Special attention is given to the way their deep spirituality shapes their unique methodology in connecting with the patient. Faith, in this sense, involves a number of expressions including Christian, Native American, etc.

On the Walls and in the Streets: American Poetry Broadsides from the 1960s

"The Politics of Printing Poetry"If you ever wanted to enter the treasure troves of a rare manuscript collection, you can now become an arm chair traveller with James Sullivan's book that explores the "ephemera" of poetry broadsides. He analyzes the role of single-sheet poems, once passed out at rallies, peace marches, and other community events (and now carefully archived as historical documents) as a form of counter culture communication. Studying poems rising from the civil rights movement and war protests, Sullivan examines the social and economic context of these poetry "fliers" by famous and unknown poets, as well as their aesthetic design. He also provides background stories on the production process and collaborations between writers, artists, designers, and printers. Critiquing as well as celebrating this "grass roots" alternative press movement of poetry for the people and by the people, freed from the system of major commercial publishing houses, he authenticates a literary tradition that has otherwise disappeared into wastebaskets and library vaults. Started as a dissertation, this book is both scrupulously researched and highly readable, with excellent illustrations of this genre -- including works by Merwin and Ginsberg. The only book in the field that I've been able to find, it is a must for poets, poetry teachers, lovers of small press, aging hippies, and believers in art's humanitarian role in bringing change.

Organic Living in 10 Simple Lessons
Published in Paperback by Barrons Educational Series (August, 2001)
Average review score:

Great introduction to Organic livingLoved the simple approach, but best of all learned Organics is not a marketing hype, but an increasing, interested way of life for many. This motivated me to search out organics, laws, labeling, government agencies and other web sites. I have learned Americans are bombarded with unnecessary chemicals, and consumerism, and we should have a choice about what we purchase. Some states are ahead in this lifestyle than others. Unfortunately, we trust the products with the small amounts, but fail to think about its build up. I am learning. Great book, and making the transformation into organics-food, cosmetics, cleaning etc. And have saved money by living a more simple life.

This would make a great gift for any number of special occasions. PS you mispelled the artist's name.

Partial to Home (Photographers at Work)
Published in Paperback by Smithsonian Institution Press (June, 1994)
Average review score:

A photographic exposition of vernacular Southern culture.Partial to Home represents the culmination of a ten year period in which the photographer, Mississippi's Birney Imes, records timeless vestiges of Southern, African-American culture throughout Mississippi. These first photographs, many of which were taken during research and photography for Juke Joints, acutely pick out specific instances that are rich in drama and heritage and smack of rural ingenuity and pragmatism as a way of life in the South.
Photographs in the book range from back porch gambling to Sunday baptisms in the river, and combines the photographers knowledge with powerful subjects to make for thoughtful, provoking, and equally joyous imagery, while chronicling and preserving a way of life that resists change but is rich in history and in its sense of familiarity.
Imes has a way of surprising the viewer with his adept visual storytelling, and, even though obviously physically present in the environment of the photography, resides as the instrument by which the often barely visible is fully seen.
I highly recommend this book.

Intelligent, Insightful, A True Gem.I have always had a passion for studying the holistic approach to traditional medicine. Most of the books I find are a little to SciFi for me to enjoy. Dr. A. Sullivan, does it remarkably well, she let's you know that she is an average women who make the necessary changes to create her present goal. She's in touch with the human side. Because of her, for the first time after so many books on holistic care I have taken the step and what a difference it has made. Also thanks to Dr. Sullivan I am packing my bags for Bastyr in January. Go ahead buy it make the changes you'll be glad you did.

Paul Revere
Published in Library Binding by Turtleback Books Distributed by Demco Media (August, 2000)
Average review score:

Exemplary scholarly and still-interesting writingSullivan uses primary sources to make Paul Revere's life and times come to life in this fine addition to the new In Their Own Words series. Partly biography, partly a detailed history of the American Revolution, the book explains the famous patriot's role in a young colony's fight for freedom. Revere is well-known for his career as a silversmith and his midnight ride from Boston to Lexington to warn colonists of the impending arrival of British soldiers; Sullivan also brings to light Revere's part in the Boston Tea Party, designed and printed money, and was a shrewd businessman who owned and operated a gunpowder factory and a copper mill.
Primary sources include letters, poems and documents. Longfellow's famous poem that immortalized Paul Revere is included. The illustrations include a map of Revere's route on April 18, 1775, photographs of Revere's silver, a reproduction of his famous portrait commissioned by John Singleton Cooper, and many illustrations and portraits, including Revere's own drawings.
The book includes a chronology, an index, a bibliography, further reading, and additional resources such as the Paul Revere House in Boston MA. Photo credits are listed. Sullivan has a distinct talent for making scholarly research accessible to young students in an engaging and interesting way, and sets an excellent example for crediting sources. Highly recommended.
